The Correct Order to Apply Your Skincare Products

You have cleansers, toners, serums, creams, oils, treatments, and sunscreen sitting on your shelf—but which one should actually go first?

Skincare layering can seem complicated, especially as routines become more elaborate. Fortunately, you do not need a strict ten-step system to get it right.

A useful general rule is to apply products from lighter textures to richer textures while keeping targeted treatments close to clean skin.

Step 1: Cleanser

Begin with cleansing.

In the morning, some people prefer a gentle water-based cleanser, while others simply rinse depending on their skin type and routine.

At night, cleansing helps remove sunscreen, makeup, oil, and impurities collected throughout the day.

If you use heavy makeup or water-resistant sunscreen, double cleansing with an oil cleanser or balm followed by a water-based cleanser can be useful.

Step 2: Toner, Essence, or Mist

Hydrating toners and essences can be applied after cleansing.

These lightweight products help prepare the skin for the steps that follow and can provide additional hydration.

You do not need to use all three. Choose the format you enjoy most.

Step 3: Treatment Serum

Next comes your targeted treatment.

This could be a vitamin C serum, niacinamide serum, peptide treatment, hydrating serum, or another product selected for your particular concern.

If using several serums, ask whether each one is actually necessary.

Two purposeful products are often better than six overlapping ones.

Step 4: Moisturizer

Moisturizer helps support hydration and creates a comfortable final layer over your lighter treatments.

Choose texture according to your skin and environment.

Gel-creams can feel refreshing in warmer climates or on combination skin, while richer creams may feel more comfortable for dry skin or colder weather.

Step 5: Facial Oil

Facial oils are usually used toward the end of a routine.

They can be applied after moisturizer or mixed into a cream, depending on the product instructions.

Not every routine needs an oil.

Step 6: Sunscreen

During the daytime, sunscreen should be the final skincare step.

Apply it after moisturizer and before makeup.

Reapplication may also be necessary depending on sun exposure and product instructions.

What About Retinoids and Exfoliants?

These targeted treatments require a little more attention.

Different products have different directions, and not every active ingredient needs to be layered within the same routine.

When in doubt, simplify.

For example, you might dedicate certain evenings to exfoliation and different evenings to retinoids rather than applying everything together.

The Best Order Is the One You Can Maintain

Skincare layering guidelines are helpful, but they should not turn your routine into a complicated science experiment.

Start with the essentials, add targeted products gradually, and build a routine that still feels easy enough to follow on a busy morning or tired evening.
